EliGene® Dental MultiBact Kit RT

Intended use

The EliGene® Dental MultiBact Kit RT is intended for the detection of dental bacteria from clinical material. Identify 12 major gum disease–associated bacteria with RT-PCR.

Principle of the method

The kit is based on the principle of qPCR. For DNA detection, primers and fluorescent probes (FAM, HEX, Cy5, and TxRed) are used.

Introduction

Periodontitis (also known as gum disease) is an infectious disease that causes inflammation of the gums, ligaments, and bones around the teeth. It is one of the most serious oral cavity diseases.

The cause of periodontitis is the long-term accumulation of bacterial plaque on the surface of the teeth. The bacteria in the plaque cause inflammation in the gums, manifesting as redness, swelling, tooth neck sensitivity, tooth pain, unpleasant breath, or bleeding when cleaning the teeth. Neglecting the infection leads to the gums receding from the teeth, the breakdown of bones and surrounding tissues, and eventually the loosening and loss of the teeth.

The onset and progression of periodontitis are adversely influenced by several factors. Among the external factors, dental hygiene and its level, smoking, diet, or stress are particularly important. People with genetic predispositions to this disease, as well as pregnant women or the elderly, are more susceptible to gum inflammation and periodontitis. The risk of infection also increases in individuals suffering from diabetes, heart disease, or autoimmune diseases.

In the case of untreated periodontitis, bacteria from the oral cavity may "migrate" to other parts of the body. This can manifest as an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, pneumonia, osteoporosis, or complications during pregnancy or childbirth.
